Throughout my time working in the NBA, I had always wanted to coach high school basketball. But when you’re employed by an NBA team, that’s not really something you can do — both because NBA rules bar involvement with high school athletes and because working in the NBA barely leaves you time to take care of yourself, let alone coach a team. So when I left the Sixers in the summer of 2016, the first thing I did was find a local high school where I could volunteer. I was the assistant coach that year, and learned a ton about a level of basketball I knew very little about. The high school game, particularly at a small, private school like I was coaching at, is very different from the NBA game.
